I’ve been involved into this fantastic project made by Zero, one of the prettiest city guide out there. The event lasted three days and was held in Milan, less than one month before Milan Design Week to warm up everybody involved in design industry. It has been absolutely fabulous, many talks, a live auction, events, and so many things that Salone will seem like its appendix! Together with Zaven studio, Paolo Cappello and Sovrappensiero studio, I guided a group of students from Politecnico di Milano and the task was designing a nice and exclusive glass for a new drink made by RedBull. The guys at RedBull were great and we had three days to work on a concept and then producing a proper presentation. Great. Anyway, here you can find photos and videos of the event. I absolutely hope next year I will be there again! THX ZERO !!!

After some exhibitions, wonderful press coverage and kudos all around, me, Zaven Studio and Matteo Zorzenoni decided to make it real. SomethingGood will become a company, designing, producing and selling nice items involving all the expert handicraftsmen that made great Italy in product design. All with great respect of their business, avoiding the big industry issues that usually make prices rising high, sharing profits equally without giving up on quality and good looking. We will present our first collection in Milan, during 2013 Design Week, in via Brera, a super-nice, super-classy road where big names are. Massimo Alba will be our host and we will display something from the next collection. I hope you will love it! Very soon, our online shop will be online and you will be able to buy directly from it what you like. For the moment, enjoy the super-nice green background of OUR WEBSITE! Finally, SOMETHING GOOD is gonna happen!

The fiber is also flame retardant and the best test was making two table lamps lit by some nice and warm halogen bulbs (which provides a good light quality but reaches higher temperatures than the fluorescent bulbs’).

Structurally, the stools are obtained by bending the upper part of the originating cylinder in the way you would made a wrapping for a present (hence the name) and despite their weight (they weight as little as 400 grams) they can bear a man standing with his feet on the seat. Then, exploiting the shrinkage the material undergoes when drying, the table are obtained by placing a metal disc with the same diameter of a soaked cylinder: the fiber shrinks around the plate and encapsulate it in a specific position.

Moreover, since the fiber it’s made with a high percentage of cotton, it can be dyed as you would do with a cloth. Needless to say, the fiber is completely natural, so its lifecycle is virtually endless.

An ancient material, made of sand and fire, bent by human hand and breath, shows its double nature, liquid and solid, and keeps touching us, from its shaping to when it enters our houses. In furnaces I learned the meaning of labour, and the passion of people moulding it. I knew the ancient tools deforming, ripping, or smoothing it. But the most important thing, and often hidden to people who observe the crystal out of the “fornasa”, iswood. Always used to make moulds before the cold precision of metals reduced its use. The wood, that sacrifices itself and accept the burning mass, and by this mass is inescapably worn, a mother giving birth to a glowing child, only to disappear and never reveal its vital contribution to future observers of smooth surfaces. To celebrate this silent mother, I made the wood revealing itself through the item, transferring its roughnes to the glass surface. A full range of objects is born, where the glass is turned into a medium for the nature of wood, in a glowing karmic inversion.

Here is the press release for the exhibitions. Hope we’ll meet there!

Should we trace a map of contemporary italian design landscape, we would start from the biggest cities,
prominent metropolis whose fame is widespread, and whose roads would connect them to the rest of the
world.
We would find then some rivers, whose stream would drive thoughts and ideas through the watered land,
in a continuous flux of cultural exchanges.
We’d trace some boundaries, defining similar areas, for languages, traditions and vocations.
But stopping ourselves at this point might be wrong. Our map would be quite empty, if we would not
include less sprawling cities, more recent towns, but nonetheless chronicled and wise, whose fame might
sometimes overtake older cities.
Hence, we felt the need to tell people who reduce this complex scenario to few “cities” what this scenario
actually means, depicting a sort of an illustrated atlas of earnest but pragmatic players, detatched but
acknowledging each other, composing and completing our otherwise empty map, painting a portrait made
of definitely different colours, that might be misread when seen individually at a close distance but, seeing
them as a whole, can reveal themselves as a Macchiaioli masterpiece.
To do that, we chose a container, a PAVILION grouping and celebrating those players, putting them into
contact, harmonizing them and not dissolving them under labels or groups, without implicating
generations or affiliations, but highlighting the work of every professional stating their will of participate
in painting this first portrait of contemporary design. A journey that, faithful to our map, enriches people
and itself of experiences, details, research and strong contents.
A journey that chose its container: a PAVILION. ITALIAN PAVILION (PADIGLIONEITALIA).
